Partner//Emotive

Mark Derby Something akin to musique concrète: people assume it must be austere & intellectual. Hardly; this is inventive, clever and—sometimes—fun. Witty, even. Use of electronics is not innovative but adds to sonic variety. Haven’t received yet, but from the image? Package looks exquisite. Favorite track: 9.

about

Partner// Emotive is about navigating femininity when traditional femininity isn’t your strong suit. It is about trying to force ties between sound and speech, and letting those ties grow organically in a digital space. It is about my lived experience of being a queer woman, and (unavoidably) about the lives of the women around me. An extended piece, it moves from comical to serious to angry to melancholy. It relies on accidents and on the work of women before me. It was simultaneously painful and relieving to make. It is the longest thing I have ever recorded. Some of it will only ever exist on these tapes. Despite being sound poetry, I am more concerned about the overall feeling that is evoked in the listener by the end, rather than the individual words themselves. Words are always paint, but sometimes they mean more - and, once someone else has heard those words, they will always mean something different.

Naomi Jackson is a musician and sound engineer based in South-East London, and a founder member of Omnii Collective (www.omniicollective.com).

REVIEWS

Jez Riley French for Treasure Hiding:
“spoken word, humour, words repeated, altered
found sound
about men bringing jewels to fame
loops and distortions
electronic, sequence
recycle human webs running

I don’t know Naomi
I like this music.
(and I suppose I should mention the other
part that of
the artwork, hard not to
packaged in a triple cassette box with origami folded
sheet and screen printed
yes)”

A Closer Listen:
“The words of Naomi Jackson stutter and fall back on themselves, forming new shapes.”
